03 November 2017. A new contribution to the series Voices from the Space Community is now online. Following her presentation during ESPI 11th Autumn Conference, Mrs. Isabelle Duvaux-Béchon, Head of the Member States Relations and Partnerships Office at ESA, presents in this paper, written in collaboration with Ulrike Bohlmann, the concept of Space 4.0, the guiding vision of ESA. Space 4.0 has been coined as the motto of the current space age and is a guiding vision for ESA as an analogy to the concept of Industry 4.0 on Earth. Building on the earlier eras of astronomy, competition and cooperation, a 4th era is emerging that should see more and more programmes done in participation around the world. ESA programmes and activities in the frame of this Space 4.0 age resonate with the actions to Inform, Innovate, Interact and Inspire, “Space 4.0i”. Download the paper here.
03 November 2017. The preparation of the post-ISS era is a central topic for international partners who have been, so far, struggling to build a steady, robust and commonly-shared vision for the future of human spaceflight and space exploration. Recent announcements suggest that the state of affairs is now progressing as agencies seem to be converging toward a shared enthusiasm for a return to the Moon in preparation of a future Mars mission. In a context where drivers seem to outweigh barriers, the Deep Space Gateway concept seems particularly close to becoming the next stage of international cooperation in space exploration. What could be the role of Europe in an international Moon programme? What are the next necessary steps to position Europe as a key partner? Download the brief here.
